Why LED and nothing else
Hardware that stays up year round faces a harder test than hardware that lives in a box eleven months a year. That rules out the bulbs that go in a tub in January. LEDs generate almost no heat and have nothing fragile inside, which is the whole reason a permanent system is possible.None of this is a reason to become an expert. It is a reason to ask what is actually going on your house, and to expect a specific answer rather than a brochure line. The people who explain it plainly are generally the ones doing it properly.
What the track does
Each diode lives in a channel, rather than clipped along an edge. The channel is the reason the system looks like nothing in daylight, and it is also what controls the direction of the light. It gets matched to the color of your trim or fascia as part of the order, so the daytime house does not change.
Individual diodes, not a strip
Each LED in the run can be set independently. Without individual control you get one color across every foot of the run. With it, the run can alternate and animate. The capability matters a handful of nights, and then it is December.Look at somebody's finished work at noon rather than at nine, because night hides sloppy mounting and daylight does not.

What it means for maintenance

Nothing about a permanent system is easy on the equipment. Summer heat builds up along a sunlit fascia, and heat is the enemy of anything with a circuit in it. Humidity is constant here, which is why connections and seals matter. Which is why the quality argument is about the joints and the housing, not the light itself.
Brightness is a setting, not a fixed value
The output is not one level. Full brightness is for December, and it is far more light than an ordinary evening wants. Most people settle at a fraction of full output, since restraint is what makes it look considered.
