First, the words
The roof edge has parts with names, and knowing them helps you read a quote. The fascia is the vertical board along the roof edge, the one the gutter hangs on. The soffit is the underside, the panel you see when you stand under the overhang and look up. The eave is the part of the roof that hangs out past the house.You will not need this vocabulary often, but it appears in every estimate, and quotes are hard to compare when you are not sure what is being described. So when the plan says soffit mounted, it is a location and not jargon.

Not every house is straightforward
Overhang depth varies a lot, and it changes the plan. A deep overhang hides the run and protects it, but it also shades the wall below. With little overhang, the choices narrow. This is exactly the kind of thing a site visit settles and a phone quote cannot.
What the eave line is worth on an ordinary night
Set to warm white, it stops being a holiday product. The practical version is finding your keys at the door, which sounds small until it is raining. A house with a lit edge reads as occupied and cared for.
Gutters, roofs and the order of operations
The eave line is shared real estate. Any planned roof work changes the sequence. Doing it out of order means paying twice for the same work. It is worth mentioning even if the roof work is only a maybe.
Upper runs
A single story house presents one eave. A two story has more than one option. The upper roofline gives you the strongest outline, because it is highest and has the most sky behind it. A lower eave over a porch or a garage puts light nearer where people actually are, which does more practical work. Running both is common, and it can be phased.
